Luoto, Klippan, Helsinki, Finland

Aerial view of Luoto island in front of downtown Helsinki

South Harbor in Helsinki is the packed bay right in front of the oldest part of the city. In the bottom of the bay you?ll have the Market Square, backed by the Presidential palace, Helsinki Town Hall and the embassy of Sweden. Large passenger ferries traveling to Estonia and Sweden dock on both sides of the South Harbor bay; in Katajanokka terminal and so-called Olympic terminal.

In the middle of the bay sits the Luoto-island. Only about 150 m wide, the island is separated from mainlad by only about 100 meters of water. On the island you can see a large villa, constructed in 1898. The villa has a restaurant called Ravintola Saaristo (Restaurant Archipelago) that is open during summer ? visitors can get to the island and restaurant on a small boat that goes back and forth between a small pier on the island and a dock facing it on mainland visible in the left corner of the photo.
